AbstractThis study presents the ForTraCC (Forecasting and Tracking of Cloud Cluster) technique using satellite and radar data. ForTraCC is an algorithm for tracking and forecast the physical characteristic of mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) through its whole life cycle using the thermal channel information (10.8 ìm) of geostationary satellites or reflectivity (20 dBZ) from CAPPI radar data. The cloud cluster detection method is based on a threshold temperature or reflectivity; the morphological and radiative parameters of each MCS are evaluated and tracking trough the life cycle based on overlapping areas of MCSs in successive images. The forecast is built taking into account the life cycle history of each MCS, generating a virtual image for the next 120 minutes. The extrapolation is based on the possible displacement of MCS (considering the position of the center of mass of the cloud cluster in previous time steps) and its size evolution. The use of this technique using radar data allow to obtain new parameters for nowcasting. This part of the study combined the volume scan from S band radar, operating during the RACCI/LBA, with the ForTraCC algorithm. The ForTraCC output allows following the rain cells during the life cycle. Rain cells were roughly defined as the 20 dBz threshold. This procedure produced 2500 life cycles to be analyzed. The preliminary results show the importance of the cloud top rate as a tool for nowcasting of the intensity of the convective cells in the next 30 minutes and allow describing the characteristics of the reflectivity profiles of the rain cells evolution during the life cycle. The ForTraCC technique using GOES 12 data is an operational tool available on line in the following.
