AbstractThe CPTEC-COLA GCM with different solar and thermal radiation schemes is used for a set of ensemble forecasts for normal and anomalously wet and dry summer months from 1997 to 2006 over central and southeastern Brazil. This region is characterized by enhanced convective cloudiness and rainfall in summer related to the South Atlantic convergence zone formation. An offline comparison of the original and two modern solar radiation schemes shows that the modern schemes calculate major atmospheric absorption and hence smaller solar radiative fluxes incident at the surface. The smaller solar radiation incident on the ground causes a decrease in evaporation and hence in convective precipitation rate in the model. The difference between the surface or top-of-the atmosphere thermal radiative fluxes calculated by original and modern thermal radiation schemes is quite smaller. Nevertheless, the change of the thermal radiation schemes in the model also affects the model results. The surface and top-of-the-atmosphere radiative fluxes simulated by the model with different solar and thermal radiation schemes are compared with the satellite-derived fluxes. The precipitation rates on the ground are compared with Global Precipitation Climatology Project data. In order to quantify the skill of ensemble forecasts various skill scores are calculated for above mentioned region.
