ABSTRACT: This work is a review on the use of remote sensing data in the study of urban areas radiant energy budgets and more specifically the heat island phenomenon. Nowadays unplanned urban sprawl has been causing severe consequences regarding the radiant energy balance of these areas. For this reason, remote sensing represents a reasonable way to monitor and study the urban climate dynamics. Certain image processing algorithms can provide accurate measurements of the physical properties of urban targets. The high heterogeneity of those and its geometrical complexity makes the improvement on the spatial resolution of thermal sensors placed on orbital platforms a first order necessity. The main concepts of urban climate dynamics as well as the relationship between urban land cover and the surface temperature are presented in this paper.
