AbstractA method to measure the lengths of rivers supported by Remote Sensing data and GIS processing is presented. The sources of information are the images collected by TERRA Polar Platform through the MODIS Sensor and the ortho-rectified GEOCOVER mosaics generated from the ETM+ Sensor onboard the LANDSAT-7 Satellite. The software to undertake the interpretation and the measurements is SPRING. TERRA and GEOCOVER products are available at no costs by NASA and SPRING can be downloaded from INPE at no costs as well. The procedures of photo-interpretation are based on a special routine available in SPRING known as Raster Edition. The routine allows the analyst to edit the interpretation directly in the display of the monitor. Within these parameters the method can be applied to any river of the planet as long as images free-of-clouds are available. Amazon and the Nile were selected because they are the longest river yet mapped through traditional methods. The results indicate that measurements obtained through MODIS and GEOCOVER match quite well as they lay within a linear error smaller than a MODIS pixel (250 meters) for a distance greater then 6900 kilometers. Results also show that the Amazon measures 6,992.15 kilometers and the Nile extends for 6,852.06 following their longest channels. The method indicates that the Amazon River is 140.09 kilometers longer than the Nile.
