| Abstract | As condições meteorológicas são fatores fundamentais na caracterização da qualidade do ar, pois são responsáveis pela dispersão dos poluentes emitidos pelas fontes e podem favorecer ou não as interações físicas e químicas que ocorrem entre eles na atmosfera. Situações meteorológicas distintas, mas com idênticas produções de poluentes, podem apresentar concentrações atmosféricas completamente diferentes, devido à influência das condições de dispersão. São José dos Campos é uma das maiores cidades do Estado de São Paulo, com problemas de poluição do ar decorrentes do fato de estar situada em um vale e de possuir um elevado número de fontes poluidoras em seu território. O black carbon (BC) também conhecido como carbono elementar é um dos constituintes do material particulado em suspensão, um dos poluentes atmosféricos que mais freqüentemente ultrapassam os padrões estabelecidos na legislação, principalmente em ambientes urbanos. Este trabalho apresenta as concentrações de BC medidas em São José dos Campos, de junho a setembro de 2007, e a influência dos sistemas frontais nas condições de dispersão deste poluente. ABSTRACT: The meteorological conditions are fundamental factors in air quality characterization, since they favor the pollutants dispersion and the physical and chemical interactions in the atmosphere. Distinct meteorological situations, with the same production of pollutants, can show completely different atmospheric concentrations, due the dispersion influences. Sao Jose dos Campos is one of the biggest cities in Sao Paulo State, Brazil, presenting air pollution problems arriving from the geographical localization in a valley and the high number of air pollution sources in its territory. Black carbon (BC), also known as elementary carbon, is one of the constituents of the particulate material suspended in the atmosphere, and one of the pollutants which most frequently surpass the Air Quality Index, mainly in urban areas. This paper presents the BC concentrations in Sao Jose dos Campos, for the period between June and September of 2007, showing the influences of the frontal systems in the dispersion of this pollutant. |
