AbstractThe Low-level Jet (LLJ) east of Andes Cordillera has been associated to the severe storm occurrence on the La Plata Basin. The objective of this paper is to verify to role of a LLJ case ocurred between 06 and 09 July 2003. These system favored deep convection followed by wind on Southern Brazil and it causing descructions in some cities of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS). We used radiosonde profiles from Pan American Climate Studies - Souding Network (PACS-SONET), the global data from National Centres for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) reanalysis, and satellite imageries and precipitation data estimated by satellite. The LLJ was defined according to Bonner criteria 1 with somre modifications. The results indicated the presence of a Cyclonic Vortex in upper levels that had an important role on the formation of a cyclogenesis followed by a frontogenesis in the Sourthern Brazil. The presence of a semi-stationary cold front on the Sourthern Brazil and the intensification of a low pressure system over Bolivia, had contributed for the foarmation of the LLJ and the generation of wind conflunce zone in low levels. The moisture transport carried through the LLJ contributed to intense precipitation in the region. Still, the presence of Polar Jet (PJ) located Northern Argentina generated an intense regions of difluence in upper levels over the RS. It had an interecation between the LLJ and the PJ and a generation of dynamic and thermodynamic conditions favorable to the convective development and the intensification of the intense winds that caused destructions in the RS.
