AbstractOs dados de radares meteorológicos localizados na porção centro sul do Brasil vêm sendo usados de forma sistemática a partir de 2004. Porém, é extremamente relevante o desenvolvimento de estudos que possam tornar estes dados cada vez mais confiáveis. Desta forma, o objetivo dessa pesquisa foi avaliar a qualidade dos dados obtidos pelos radares do DECEA a partir da comparação com dados obtidos pelo radar a bordo da missão TRMM (Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission). Os resultados mostraram que a maioria dos radares avaliados tendem a superestimar ligeiramente os valores de refletividade quando comparados com os dados obtidos pelo radar do TRMM. Para um caso particular, verificou-se que a diferença foi superior a 6 dBZ, valor considerado muito acima de 2 dBZ definido como limite aceitável quando se compara um radar de banda S com outro de banda Ku (Chandrasekar et al., 2006). ABSTRACT: Data from the weather radars located in southern Brazil has been used by the CPTEC and DECEA since 2004. The quality of the data was not evaluated yet, and for applications like nowcasting, data assimilation and rainfall estimation it is necessary to guarantee that the data are good enough to be used. Therefore, the main goal of this assignment was to evaluate the quality of the data produced by the radar network using the information acquired by the TRMM-PR (Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission Precipitation Radar) as reference. The results showed that in most cases the ground radars tend to slightly overestimate reflectivity values when compared with PR. It was also showed that a particular radar requires attention due to its large offset and noises present in its products (about 6 dBZ)..
