ABSTRACT: Clouds modulate the Earths weather and climate through interaction with solar and longwave radiation. Climate and remote sensing often simplify the longwave radiative transfer by neglecting cloud and aerosol particles scattering. Longwave scattering by clouds and aerosol particles has received increased attention in the last two decades. Although the potential importance of scattering of longwave radiation by cloud particles has been recognized, most studies have focused their analyses on high clouds under overcast conditions and few estimates of the global impact of scattering have been presented. In this context, this study aims to present an estimate of the global impact of multiple-scattering by cloud particles on the Earth Radiation Budget. Irradiances were calculated using the k-distribution radiative transfer models, line-by-line and the discrete ordinate multiple scattering model. Thermodynamic vertical profiles were based from the ECMWF reanalyzes and cloud properties from ISCCP. Changes in irradiances due to multiple scattering are analyzed in terms of cloud optical depth and particle shape. Sensitivity tests demonstrate that the effect of longwave scattering by stratocumulus clouds over subsidence regions is as important as the effect of cirrus clouds in the tropics. Cloud particles scattering reduces the global annual mean outgoing longwave radiation by 3 W/m2. Although this value is small compared to global annual mean outgoing longwave radiation at top of the atmosphere of 240 W/m2, it is significant when compared to cloud longwave forcing of 31 W/m2 and net cloud forcing of -14 W/m2. |
