ABSTRACT: The dynamic and physical processes in the atmosphere near the surface are determined by soil heat flux and soil moisture. Therefore, it is important to improve the representation of these processes in models for weather forecast and climate prediction. The modeling of these processes brings significant improvements in the understanding of the interactions between the surface and atmosphere, and that the inadequate representation of the initial conditions and surface processes has a negative impact on weather and climate. Thus, this work describes an experiment of assessing the coupling between a land data assimilation system and the Eta model, currently used as the main model for the weather forecasting at CPTEC/INPE. From a soil moisture field from the South American Land Data Assimilation System, based on the land surface model Noah, it was generated 16 initial conditions of soil moisture, troubled by a technique that uses empirical orthogonal functions, producing fields that have the same spatial structure of the deviations of the daily soil moisture. These fields are used to initialize the soil moisture on Eta model, producing an ensemble with 8 members. |
