AbstractEste trabalho analisa a variabilidade interanual da cobertura vegetal sobre o Brasil e vizinhanças, utilizando-se médias mensais de composições quinzenais do Índice de Vegetação por Diferença Normalizada (NDVI) derivada do instrumento Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) para o período de 1982 a 2003. A metodologia utilizada envolve a Análise Harmônica e de Funções Ortogonais Empíricas (EOF). Foram apresentados os três principais modos de variabilidade interanual do NDVI que estão essencialmente associados com o fenômeno ENOS. Os padrões espaciais dos modos apresentados revelam que as anomalias de NDVI variam espacialmente em função do evento e época do ano. ABSTRACT: This work analyses the interannual variability of the vegetation cover in Brazil and vicinities using monthly mean of biweekly Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) composites derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument, for the 1982-2003 period. The methodology used involves harmonic analyses and Empirical Orthogonal Functions. The results depicts 3 main modes of interannual variability of NDVI which are essentiallyrelated to ENSO events. Geographically the spatial patterns of the obtained modes of the NDVI anomalies vary are related to the ENSO eventand time of the year.
