AbstractNeste trabalho são avaliados os campos de temperatura da superfície do mar produzidos pelos modelos globais acoplados utilizados no IPCC-AR4. Comparou-se os resultados das simulações para o século XX com observações, avaliando-se o viés, o desvio padrão, o índice NINO3.4 e a região do Atlântico Sul adjacente aos subtrópicos da América do Sul. Os modelos em média produzem um viés frio nas zonas de convergência e nos oceanos Pacífico e Atlântico norte, e um viés quente ao sul de 45S. Em média o número de Niños e Niñas é simulado corretamente, mas são dois meses mais curtos. Com base nesta análise preliminar, os modelos mais indicados para downscaling de mudanças climáticas sobre a América do Sul, foram o INGV-ECHAM4.6 e o GFDL-CM2.1, seguidos de perto pelo MPI-ECHAM5, MetOffice-HadCM3 e CSIRO-Mk3.5. ABSTRACT: In this paper the sea surface temperatures simulated by the global coupled models used in IPCC-AR4 are examined. Results from the 20th century control simulations are compared with observations and the bias, the standard deviation, the NINO3.4 index and the South Atlantic region close to the south american subtropics are analyzed. On average the models produce a cold bias in the convergence zones and over the northern Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and a hot bias south of 45S. The mean numbers of Niños and Niñas are correctly simulated but the events are 2 months shorter than observed. Based on this preliminary analysis the INGV-ECHAM4.6 and GFDL-CM2.1 models, followed closely by MPI-ECHAM5, MetOffice-HadCM3 and CSIRO-Mk3.5, are the most suitable for downscaling climate change scenarios over South America.
