ABSTRACT: In this work, a synoptic classification of dominant atmospheric circulation during the winter of 2007 was carried out associated with the principal extreme meteorological events occurred over the Center and Southern Regions of Brazil. The rotated Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is used to obtain the basic patterns of sea level pressure (slp) and 500 hPa geopotential heights (hgt500). The results obtained identify three dominant synoptic patterns during the winter of 2007. The first pattern was associated with classic events of cold air outbreak over South America related with friagemover Brazil. The second pattern was related with meteorological events associated with low relative humidity air over the Center, Southeast and Western Regions of Brazil. The third synoptic pattern was also associated with cold waves over South America but more confined to the south of the continent, including the southern Region of Brazil. By means of the analysis of the Factors Loadings series, it was concluded that the first pattern dominated mainly during May and September months. The second pattern acted in June and August and the last synoptic pattern influenced the weather in a determinant way during July.
