| Abstract | Estuda-se a climatologia de chuva nos subtrópicos do Hemisfério Sul, para os meses de dezembro a março, entre 20S e 40S, assim como a climatologia de transporte de umidade integrado na vertical para identificar as principais vias de aporte de umidade pela circulação global para as regiões de alta precipitação. Propõe-se uma divisão da faixa subtropical em sete setores longitudinais de acordo com o seu total de precipitação e observa-se uma separação em três grupos, com precipitação muito acima, próxima e muito abaixo de 3mm/dia. Mostrou-se que as chuvas nos subtrópicos são bem moduladas pelo transporte meridional de umidade, e os setores mais úmidos recebem escoamento vindo dos alísios. Apenas na América do Sul a umidade vinda do Hemisfério Norte chega aos subtrópicos do Hemisfério Sul. Mostrou-se que transientes têm grande influência sobre o transporte de umidade no continente, produzindo um padrão de duplo máximo na sua componente meridional. As semelhanças qualitativas entre o padrão espacial das chuvas, do transporte de umidade e da sua variabilidade indicam que este transporte é responsável por modular as chuvas nos subtrópicos do continente e que estas recebem expressiva contribuição dos mesmos transientes que o afetam. ABSTRACT: The December to March rainfall climatology for the southern subtropics, 40S to 20S, is studied together with the climatology of vertically integrated moisture transport, so as to identify the main pathways of moisture transport towards high rainfall regions. A subdivision of the subtropical band in longitudinal sectors according to precipitation totals is proposed and it is observed that these sectors split into three categories, with rainfall greater than, similar to and smaller than 3mm/day. It is shown that rainfall in the subtropics is well modulated by the meridional moisture transport. The very humid sectors receive meridional flow coming from the trade wind. Exclusively in South America does moisture from the Northern Hemisphere reach the southern tropics. It is shown that transients have a large influence over moisture transport, producing a pattern of two maxima of its meridional component in the subtropics. The notorious qualitative similarities between the spatial patterns of rainfall, meridional moisture transport and its standard deviation show that this transport effectively modulates rainfall in the subtropics and also points towards a significant contribution from transients to the rainfall climatology. |
