AbstractThe Southern Space Observatory - SSO/CRS/CIE/INPE - MCT, (29S, 53W) at São Martinho da Serra, RS, in South of Brazil, carried out several radio sciences experiments. One of the main points for the success of such researches is the observed low level of electromagnetic noise, either natural or anthropogenic radio frequency sources. This was one of the main factors for choosing the site location for the SSO. For monitoring the interference level at the Observatorys site it is realized, since 1992, the periodic data acquisition on the 10-240MHz range of radio frequency. The procedures to determine the radio noise level were realized using one spectrum analyzer and an omnidirectional antenna. The methodology of data acquisitions was to amplify the signal from the antenna, then evaluate this signal in one spectrum analyzer, through a GPIB. The data is instantly transmitted from SSO to the Radio Frequency and Telecommunication Laboratory at the Southern Regional Space Research Center - CRS/CIE/INPE - MCT, in Santa Maria, RS, for further analysis and stored, allowing monitoring the Electromagnetic Spectrum power for long periods. The site quality is remarkable, as the power of the Electromagnetic Spectrum is much lower than that measured at the Radio Frequency and Telecommunication Laboratory, in Santa Maria, RS, where the signals do not exceed -60 dB. On the Site at the SSO, due to the low power observed, weak radio signals can only be received by using good quality amplifiers. Another important feature is that in the frequency range between 115 to 180 MHz, no significant signal power is observed in this Electromagnetic Spectrum range. The several observations of the Electromagnetic Spectrum at the SSO, obtained since 1992, are compared with the currents observations. The analyze among different frequency bands, during these periods of data acquisition, show that the SSO remain free of any strong electromagnetic interference, being ideal for the installation of radio astronomic instrumentation.
