AbstractThrough the Brazilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR) the Program INTERCONF (Air-Sea Interaction at Brazil-Malvinas Confluence) aims to study the interaction between ocean and atmosphere in the region of contact between the warm waters of the Brazil Current (BC) and the Malvinas Current (MC). The resulting interactions from this thermal contrast are given in the form of latent heat flux (evaporation) and sensible heat flux (convection and conduction). Recent publications of PEZZI et al. (2005, 2009), PEZZI and SOUZA (2009) and Acevedo et al. (2009) report results of observations of INTERCONF, suggesting that the ocean front which characterizes the region of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (CBM) modulates the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in the absence of largescale atmospheric systems operating in the region (e.g., frontal atmospheric system, extratropical cyclones). The objective of this paper is to describe the heat fluxes in the Southern Atlantic Ocean based on remote sensing data and perform a comparison between these fluxes with those estimated from in situ data collected in the BMC region. The data were collected in situ during the course of Operation Antarctica 23, from November 2 to November 4 2004. The results demonstrate a greater instability of ABL on the north side (warm) of the oceanographic front associated with more intense heat fluxes on that side of the front.
