AbstractAerosol optical depth (AOD) data at the Southern Space Observatory SSO/CRS/INPE, (29.4ºS, 53.8ºW), South of Brazil, have been obtained using the Brewer Spectrophotometers MKIV #081 (from 1992 to 1999), MKII #056 (from 2000 to 2002) e MKIII #167 (from 2002 to 2006). Langley Method has been applied to obtain AOD values from August 1992 to December 2006 on five specific wavelengths: 306.3, 310.1, 313.5, 316.7, 320.1 nm. Only cloudiness days were used in this analysis and the data were separated for mornings and afternoons. The values above the average plus twice the standard deviation were considered AOD peaks. The aim of this work is to analyze the influence of biomass burning over the SSO by the AOD peaks. Satellites images like NOAA 12 and 16 were used to analyze the biomass burning sites four days before the AOD peak day. The backward trajectories were traced at 500 hPa and 700 hPa using the HYSPLIT Model. The trajectories showed that some days air masses leaving the Central of Brazil, Paraguay and/or North of Argentina arrived over the Observatory mainly in the highest biomass burning period, from July to December. The events analyzed showed that AOD high values at Southern of Brazil probably were from biomass burning sites from North and Central of Brazil, Paraguay and/or North of Argentina.
