AbstractSpace Weather is related to the conditions of the interplanetary environment and its effects on the Earth. These conditions are modulated by the 11-year solar activity cycle. The Sun ejects plasma and magnetic field structures which may hit the Earths magnetosphere, causing geomagnetic storms. Interplanetary counterparts of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and corotating interaction regions (CIRs) are main interplanetary structures causing the geomagnetic disturbances in the maximum and minimum solar activity periods, respectively. The damages of geomagnetic storms include the loss of data from satellite, signal scintillation, interference on radars, telecommunication cable disruption, electricity grid disturbance and electrical power black-out. High energy galactic cosmic ray intensity observed by ground-based detectors also changes responding to interplanetary disturbances such as CMEs and CIRs. Muons are secondary cosmic rays originated from inelastic collisions of high energy cosmic rays with atmospheric nuclei in the high altitude atmosphere. The purpose of this work is to discuss the modulation of cosmic rays (~50GeV) observed with the Muon Detector Telescope (MDT), in the WHI period between March 20 to April 16, 2008. The MDT was installed in 2001 at the Southern Space Observatory - SSO/CRS/INPE (29.4ºS, 53.8° W, 480 m a.s.l.) and upgraded later in 2005. The MDT in 2008 is composed of 56 detectors (2x4x7) with a temporal resolution of one minute. Plasma and magnetic field data from ACE satellite and Dst index are compared with cosmic rays data. Fast interplanetary structures erupted from the Sun, such as the remnants of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) and Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs), often propagate with a speed exceeding the magnetosonic speed, and thus drive interplanetary shocks. Because of a larger spatial extent of shocks than its correspond interplanetary structures, it is usual that spacecrafts near Earths orbit measure only the shock. A significant number of shocks are geoeffective, causing moderate (-50 < Dst < -100) and intense (Dst < -100) geomagnetic storms. Another observed effect is the short-term cosmic ray decrease (Forbush Decrease) recorded by ground based detectors including neutron monitors and muon detectors. In this work we investigate the geoeffectiveness of interplanetary shocks as well as the Forbush Decreases around the solar maximum of solar cycle 23. We select the year of 2001 for this study. We analyze plasma and magnetic field data together with particle counting rates (>60 MeV) observed by Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) and the anti-coincidence guard of the GSFC medium energy experiment onboard IMP-8 spacecrafts. We also analyze data from neutron monitors with different geomagnetic cutoff rigidities, namely, Thule - Greenland (0.0 GV), Climax Colorado, USA (2.97 GV), Beijing China (9.56 GV) and Haleakala Hawaii, USA (12.91 GV). Another cosmic rays data source for our analyses is our muon detector telescope (MDT), which was a prototype in 2001, with 4 square meter detection area, installed at the Southern Space Observatory (SSO/CRS/INPE MCT), (29.4°S, 53.8°W, 480 m a.s.l.), in São Martinho da Serra, RS, in the south of Brazil. We investigate the correlation between shock strength (compression ratio) and the magnitude of cosmic ray decrease in different energy levels.
