AbstractHorizontal winds in the Mesosphere Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region have been measured by SKiYMET meteor radar at Santa Maria (29,7°S, 53,8°W), since December 2004. This is the first detailed study using the Santa Maria SKiYMET data . The data period used for this analysis is the three years of observation from 2005 to 2007. Monthly and annual analyses are made to investigate, respectively, the seasonal and inter-annual variations of mean winds and atmospheric tides. The results for the mean wind are compared with the Horizontal neutral wind model (HWM-93), and the results for atmospheric tides are compared with the Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM-00). Divergences were found in both these comparisons. An annual variation is found in the zonal component of the mean wind that it is different to that of the HWM-93 model. The zonal component of the diurnal tide shows a mainly annual variation, while GSWM-00 shows a semiannual oscillation for both components. The zonal diurnal tide vertical wavelength is about 27 km, much smaller than suggested by the model. The semidiurnal tide shows the most divergence from GSWM-00. There are seasonal and inter-annual variations in both components of the semidiurnal tide, and the behavior of the phase is evanescent during almost all of the year.
