ABSTRACT: The research and development of technologies in the space and environmental areas in INPE comes requiring the studies of innovative materials. In many cases this innovation has been sought in nanotechnology. Ceramic nanomaterials has been one of materials investigated for one of these applications, both in the form of nanostructured ceramics (dense, porous) and nanoparticuled powders. In both cases it is necessary to control the chemical and physical characteristics of the final powders, in particular, the processing parameters of these powders to minimize the formation of aggregates of nanoparticles. Therefore, this research originated in the necessity of understanding the formation of agglomerates and aggregates in powders of ceramic oxides. Thus, in this work are proposed unconventional methods to achieve two critical stages in the processing of nanoparticuled powders: drying and calcination. The material selected for this research was hydrated alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$ . xH$_2$O), that after heat treatments of drying and calcination become in alumina (Al$_2$O$_3$). This choice was based on its scientific and technology importance, and in the fact of this material to have been widely quoted by other authors. In this investigation, the alumina mono and tri-hydrated was obtained from sol-gel synthesis followed by liquid-liquid extraction of water with alcohols. The inorganic alcohols precursor used was aluminum nitrate, to provide greater control over the parameters of precipitation and lower cost of reagents involved. For the liquid-liquid extraction were used ethyl and isopropyl alcohol, based in the solubility of aluminum nitrate in these liquids and in their different molecular polarities. The step of drying gels obtained was performed in vacuum and at room temperature. The dry powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the type of alcohol used in the extraction of water promoted the formation of hydrated alumina with different amounts of structural water. Thus, by the liquid-liquid extraction with ethyl alcohol was obtained $\gamma$-Al$_2$O$_3$.H$_2$O (pseudo-boehmite) and with isopropyl alcohol was obtained $\alpha$-Al$_2$O$_3$.3H$_2$O (baierita). On calcination of dry hydrated alumina were investigated the heat treatment, temperature and time parameters in heating by microwave and the results compared with the conventional heating. We investigated the characteristics of the powders processed in microwave oven in the temperature range from 250 to 400°C and heat treatment times of 5, 10, and 15 minutes. The powers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and gaseous nitrogen porosimetry. The results showed that the heat treatment by microwave is more efficient to obtain alumina due to lower temperature and time to calcination. Moreover, experimental evidences showed that the powders processed by microwaves are composed of nanoparticles. |
