ABSTRACT: The variability of the atmospheric circulation over South America and the adjacent oceans is modulated by the global circulation, which is driven by the solar activity and by internal oscillation modes of the atmosphere. Additionally, the coupling between the oceans and the atmosphere in the tropical region modulates the climate on inter-annual, decadal, and glacial/interglacial time scales. Several observations suggest that the Earths climate is changing. The increase of the surface temperature is not uniformly distributed over the globe, which indicates that the evolution of the atmospheric-oceanic coupled systems leads to non-uniform patterns of temperature. The increase of temperature is mainly attributed to human activity that causes large changes in the atmospheric composition and Earths surface properties. However, there might be a contribution from natural climate forcings (e.g. solar variability, volcanic aerosols, and particle precipitation from the radiation belts). In this work, the evolution of the energetics of the large-scale systems over South America and adjacent oceans during the last three decades is investigated. The Lorenz energy cycle is employed to identify trends and quasi-periodic oscillations of the synoptic systems. Moreover, the trends and oscillations identified are compared to the variability of geophysical and solar phenomena. While the response of the large-scale meteorological systems to El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is investigated comparing the energetics of the systems with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI), the response to volcanic activity is carried out comparing the energetics with the atmospheric optical depth at 500 nm. Maximum and minimum values of the energy components of the tropical systems occur during El Nino and La Nina, respectively. The changes of the atmospheric circulation due to the injection of volcanic aerosols into the troposphere and stratosphere from the El Chichon and Mt. Pinatubo eruptions were mainly observed in the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). A strong coupling between the Upper Tropospheric Cyclonic Vortex (UTCV) and the Intertropical convergence zone was identified, where intensifications of the ITCZ lead to intensifications of the UTCV and vice-versa. The processes related to the baroclinic instability and barotropic stability predominate in the ITCZ. The negative conversion of the eddy kinetic energy to the zonal kinetic energy of the UTCV region suggests the predominance of the barotropic instability in this region. The large values of the A$_E$-K$_E$ energy conversion of the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) indicate the predominance of the baroclinic instability. In addition, long-term trends were also identified in the energy cycle of the synoptic systems studied. The sensibility of the systems to external forcings was investigated employing a general circulation model developed by the \textit{Goddard Institute for Space Studies} (GISS). A set of idealized experiments was realized to identify the regions that are potentially affected by the variability of the total solar irradiance and the high-energy particle precipitation from the radiation belts. The external forcings affect the ITCZ, the SACZ, and the South Pacific Convergence Zone (SPCZ), by inducing changes in the thermal structure and composition of the middle and upper atmosphere. |
