ABSTRACT: The Brazilian Amazon has a deficit of 35\% of coverage regarding topographic mapping 1:100,000 scale. Furthermore, this information when available needs to be up-dated or re-mapped. This dissertation presents a viable alternative to overcome this scenario using a combination of planialtimetric information from two orbital SAR (\textit{Synthetic Aperture Radar}) missions. The altimetry was acquired from \textit{Shuttle Radar Topography Mission} (SRTM), while the planimetry was provided from \textit{Fine Beam Dual} (FBD - HH and HV) images of the \textit{Phased Array L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar} (PALSAR) sensor onboard of the \textit{Advanced Land Satellite Observing Satellite} (ALOS). The research was carried out in the mountainous area of the Serra dos Carajás (Pará), located on the easternmost border of the Amazon region. The quality of the planialtimetrics information was evaluated in relation to precise planialtimetric measurements acquired from \textit{Global Positioning System} (GPS) field campaigns. The field information was used as \textit{Ground Control Points} (GCPs) for the geometric correction of FBD-PALSAR images, as \textit{Independent Check Points} (ICPs) for the calculation of the altimetric accuracy of SRTM-3 DEM, and also for the planimetric accuracies of SRTM-3 DEM and FBD-PALSAR ortho-images. The evaluations were performed following two approaches: (1) the use of \textit{Root Mean Square Error} (RMSE) and (2) calculations of tendency and precision analysis. The investigation has shown that the planialtimetric quality of the orbital products fulfilled the Brazilian Map Accuracy Standards requirements for 1:100,000 A Class map. Categories of information according to Specifications for the Structuring of Geospatial Vector Data (ET-EDGV) were SRTM-3 and PALSAR data were used to produce a topographic map corresponding to the SB-22-ZA-II- Serra dos Carajás topographic sheet. Thus, the use of combination of information provided by PALSAR and SRTM-3 data can be considered a promising alternative for scale 1:100,000 or more topographic mapping in similar environments of the Amazon region, where topographic information is lacking or needs to be updated. |
