AbstractSignificant variations of neutral composition in the F-region is shown by means of comparisons between experimental and predicted values of OI 6300A nightglow. Diffusive equilibrium is assumed for the altitude range under investigation. Such variations were more readily observed during major pertubations of the ionosphere and neutral atmosphere. These pertubations are in turn supposed to be generated by the global pressure pattern of the Earth nocturnal sector, viz., by large low latitude pressure gradients stemming from thermospheric winds crossing polar Terminator with speed vectors oriented towards the equator in the midnight zone. The input data for the OI 6300A airglow simulation are basicaly high accuracy (5%) eletron density data plus an appropriate model of the neutral atmosphere. All data were colected at Arecibo, Puerto Rico (geographic coordinates 18,35ºN, 66,75ºW).
