AbstractThe field scattered by a general surface of revolution, when illuminated with linearly, circularly, or elliptically polarized feeds, can be calculated by the physical optics method, which consists of the integration of the currents induced in the reflector surface. Generally, the field integrals cannot be carried out analytically and it is necessary to use numerical methods. By the asymptotic physical optics method, the integrals that yield the scattered field can be evaluated analytically by the method of stationary phase. Radiation patherns were obtained for parabolic and hyperbolic surfaces, using the formulation developed in both cases. It is found that with the asymptotic physical optics method, there is an appreciable reduction in the processing time it takes for the calculation of the radiated field. For large reflectors, it is advantageous to use the approximation of the physical optics, since it yields the radiation patherns with good accuracy when compared to the full physical optics solution.
