Abstract PRODES and considered the world's largest forest monitoring project using techniques of remote sensing by satellite. 0 National Institute for Space Research, INPE, for many years promotes the interpretation of satellite images of the North American Landsa to follow the evolution of gross deforestation of Brazilian Amazonia. This effort has generated results for the period from 1974 to 1996. 0 This study, covering the years 1997 (estimate generated from the analysis of all the images that make up the Brazilian Amazon) and 1998 (a sample-based estimate), updates the historical series of extension and average rate of gross deforestation in the Amazon, and provides an updated vision that lets you explore the causes and effects of deforestation and provide indicators to guide the various public policies in the region. Similar to the last study conducted by the Institute, this text incorporates data on the distribution of the average rate of gross desfiorestamento by forest physiognomy and size desfiorestada area. 0 work presented required the effort of approximately 50,000 person x hours and 10,000 hours per machine, and investments of us- 1.5 million order. Thus, the Ministry of Science and Technology, through INPE, contributes in a fundamental way with the bodies of environmental enforcement by providing systematic information on the critcas areas, which can increase the efficiency of action IBMA.
