AbstractA practical application of design sensitivity analysis to the optimization process of a complex satellite structure is presented. The structural optimization problem is to minimize the lowest natural longitudinal frequency of the structure of SACI-I (the Brazilian Scientific Satellite), subject to constraints on the natural lateral frequencies. The need for reducing the lowest longitudinal natural frequency was evidenced by the numerical and experimental results which showed excessively high levels of acceleration on the electronic components due to the proximity of that frequency to the natural frequency of the structural framework holding the printed circuit boards. In general, this type of problem is very complex to be approached by a trial-and-error procedure, and, since the number of design variables involved is to large, it is not practical to be solved by an automatic optimization process. Design sensitivity analysis plays a very important role in turning the optimization problem of complex structures treatable. This is achieved in two stages. In the first stage, a design sensitivity analysis is performed with the whole set of design variables. Then, the design space is reduced by elimination of all the design variables corresponding to sensitivities bellow a specified threshold. In the second stage, the reduced design space is used to perform the optimization procedure. With this strategy, a significant reduction of the lowest natural longitudinal frequency was attained..
