AbstractSeveral Institutes and Universities in Brazil have an interest in Space Science. Amoung these, the Institute of Geophysics and Astronomy (IAG) of the University of São Paulo (USP), the University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), the Institute of Space Activities (LAE) of the Air Force, and several others. The major Space Science center is the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The National Institute for Space Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE) is a governmental, nonmilitary organization devoted to space activities in Brazil. INPE was created in 1971. It succeeded the National Space Activities Committee (Comissão Nacional de Atividades Espaciais - CNAE) created in August, 1961. The Institute is today affiliated with the Secretariat of Science and Technology (Secretaria de Ciência e Tecnologia - SCT). Policy decisions regarding the activities of the Institute are established by the Brazilian Committee on Space Activities (Comissão Brasileira de Atividades Espaciais - COBAE) at the ministerial level. The headquarters of the National Institute for Space Research are located at São José dos Campos, SP (23ºS, 46ºW), with additional facilities in Cachoeira Paulista, SP (23ºS, 450ºW), Cuiabd, MT (15ºS, 56ºW), Natal, RN (05ºS, 35ºW), Fortaleza, CE (03ºS, 38ºW), Atibaia, SP (23ºS, 46ºW), São Paulo, SP (23ºS, 46ºW) and Campina Grande, PB (07ºS, 36ºW). Sao Jos6 dos Campos is the major research center while other facilities are dedicated mainly to data acquisition and processing. The total staff of INPE numbers 1605 of which 185 hold Masters degrees and 140 PhDs. Research and Development at INPE are structured by coordinators and implemented through the action of various Divisions, Uboratories, Agencies and Centers. Research activities are related to Space Geophysics, Atmospheric Physics, Aeronomy, Astrophysics, Meteorology and Oceanography, Radioastronomy and Solar Physics, Sattelite Data Applications, and Instrumentation. Specific research installations at INPE include a laboratory equipped with a GE IMAGE-100 automatic image interpretation system, and a Bandeirante aircraft instrumented with a multispectral. scanner RC-1 0 and special cameras for remote sensing. The Institute also operates a ground receiving station for the LANDSAT satellite series and a processing and production laboratory for remote sensing imagery. INPE also operates two ground receiving stations for the polar orbiting (TIROS-N) and geoestationary (GOES) meteorological satellites, capable of receiving and processing all the products available (high and low resolution imagery and DCP signals). The users throughout the country can receive, in near real time, all high resolution digital signals which are transmitted through telephone lines and displayed on a color TV screen of equipment developed by INPE.
