AbstractOzone destruction in the Antarctic stratosphere in 1987 was the largest yet during the last decade. Recent measurements indicate that at least large part of this destruction is due to chemical reactions of ozone and chlorine. This chlorine reacts in a catalytic way which means that it is not destructed itself in the process, being able to destroy thousands of ozone molecules. Chlorine is added to the atmosphere by anthropogenic means, being part of artificial molecules that are very stable in the troposhere, the so called CFCs. These can be transported up to the stratosphere since their lifetimes are very long. The status of very stable is changed in the stratosphere to very unstable, by the UV radiation present in the stratosphere, which will free the chlorine atom by photolysis. This starts the ozone destruction process. Ozonesonde data show that the ozone total content decreased from 300 DU (Dobson Units) to 175 DU, between August 15 and September 15, in 1987, near the Brazilian station Ferraz. Measurements made from satellite show that the ozone hole is present over the whole Antarctic Continent.
