AbstractThe Southern Regional Space Research Center CRS/INPE-MCT in collaboration with the Santa Maria Space Science Laboratory LACESM/CT-UFSM, in Santa Maria, RS, South of Brazil, are interested in developing low frequencies radio telescopes and radio interferometer systems based on the concept of phased array interferometric stations. Some studies have been performed to analyze the possibility to install Low Frequency Array LOFAR stations at the site of the Southern Space Observatory SSO/CRS/INPE-MCT (29.4°S, 53.8°W, 480m), in São Martinho da Serra, which is approximately 54 km distant from the city of Santa Maria, in Rio Grande do Sul state. Initially, the motivations for monitoring the Electromagnetic Spectrum at the Site of SSO, in the low frequencies ranges, aimed to demonstrate which frequency spectral bands were free of artificial radio noise interference, and to verify the potential existence of nature radio interference in the site. Currently, besides this motivation, it has being verified the possibility to install, at the SSO, modern LOFAR stations. The power Electromagnetic Spectrum density monitoring has been conducted periodically since 1992. The spectrum monitoring results showed that the SSO site area was free from artificial and natural radio interference, which was important for choosing the Observatory location and for its construction. This is positive for implementation of a modern version of a radio interferometric phased array such as employed in the construction of the LOFAR, following the European way of implementation. The monitoring results have demonstrated that the characteristics of the Electromagnetic Spectrum in the SSO are similar to those of the European LOFAR stations. In order to monitoring the interference level at the Observatorys site it is perfomed a periodic data acquisition on the radio frequency range 10 240 MHz. The procedures to determine the radio noise level were accomplished by using a spectrum analyzer and an omnidirectional antenna. The methodology of data acquisitions was to amplify the signal from the antenna, then evaluate this signal in spectrum analyzer, through a GPIB. The data is transmitted from SSO to the Radio Frequency and Telecommunication Laboratory at the Southern Regional Space Research Center CRS/INPE - MCT, in Santa Maria, RS, for further analysis and database, allowing the monitoring of the Electromagnetic Spectrum power for long periods. The monitoring of the radio interference level in the SSO aims to gather spectral data for the Observatorys Site qualification as a radio quite site for installation of radio astronomy instrumentation, radio free of radio noise. Currently, by means of spectral data analysis, one can conclude that the SSOs site is electromagnetic compatible with that of the LOFAR systems. Therefore, it has been considered the possibilities to implement the construction of some LOFAR stations, similar to the Europeans, at the Southern Space Observatory. Nowadays, is being developed an interferometric array similar to LOFAR Prototype Station LOPES, using active antennas thin inverted-V dipole, designed to cover the sub-100 MHz frequency range of LOFAR.
