AbstractEste estudo buscou avaliar a relação entre qualidade da água e desflorestamento da planície de inundação do Lago Grande de Curuai (LGC), localizada na várzea do Baixo Amazonas. A concentração de clorofila a foi utilizada como parâmetro para determinação da qualidade da água. As medidas de concentração foram obtidas em campanhas de campo realizadas em distintas fases da hidrógrafa do LGC entre setembro de 2003 a julho de 2004. As amostras de clorofila foram espacializadas em um Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG) e submetidas à análise espacial pelo método de Krigeagem Ordinária. As imagens de concentração de clorofila a interpoladas foram classificadas, segundo os níveis tróficos propostos pela Companhia Ambiental do Estado de São Paulo (CETESB). As imagens dos sensores MSS/Landsat e TM/Landsat foram utilizadas para mapear as áreas desflorestadas na planície do Lago Grande de Curuai (LGC) entre a década de 1970 e a presente data. Verificou-se que grande parte da planície era ocupada por cobertura florestal na década de 1970, tendo sido removida ao longo do tempo. A integração do mapa de níveis tróficos e do mapa de desflorestamento, permitiu verificar que as regiões do lago com qualidade mais degradada encontram-se mais próximas de áreas sujeitas ao desflorestamento. ABSTRACT: This study was carried out to assess the relationship between water quality and wetland deforestation on Curuai Floodplain, in the Lower Amazon. Concentrations of chlorophyll a were used as a proxy of water quality, to profit from data collected in four missions carried out from September 2003 to July 2004. Chlorophyll data was input to a Geographic Information System (GIS) e submitted to spatial analysis with Kriging Interpolation Method. Chlorophyll concentrations images were classified based on thophic-level classes determined by Environment Company of São Paulo State (CETESB). Deforested areas were mapped using MSS/Lansat and TM/Landsat images. Two classes were used (FORES and NON-FOREST The results showe that there was high rates of deforestation. Intrating the thophic-level maps with the deforestation map, it was verified that the deforestation of Curuai Floodplain can be an influenced by water quality.
