AbstractAquatic environment science has arrived at a stage where many of the significant problems which could be tackled with point sampling from boats have been taken as far as ois practical with presently available technology. Moreover in recent years, it has become clear that many water quality problems are influenced by short-term changes in the forcing functions as well as long-term changes in the drainage basin. The undersatanding of different time and space scales of environmental processes require sequenced and synoptic data, which can only be provided by the integration of remote sensing technology into the current methods. This understanding is crucial for addressing the main issues of the 21 century environmental agenda, which focus on global change and sustainable development.
