| Abstract | Incêndios florestais e queimadas em regiões tropicais foram reconhecidos entre os grandes problemas ambientais - climáticos nas últimas duas décadas. As emissões atmosféricas da queima de vegetação e as alterações na cobertura terrestre resultantes geram impactos significativos nos sistemas climáticos em escala local, regional e globa].'Para acompanhar estes eventos e apoiar o planejamento das atividades de controle e fiscalização do uso antrópico do fogo, o Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis - IBAMA, opera por vários anos em conjunto com o Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais - INPE, um sistema de monitoramento baseado na aplicação intensiva de tecnologias de geoprocessamento. 0 monitoramento operacional cobre todo Brasil e vem sendo expandido para diversos países da América do Sul. As coordenadas geográficas dos focos de calor nas imagens dos satélites, assim como dados meteorológicos e climáticos, são processados e analisados para indicar as áreas de risco e locais que necessitem de inspeções e controle em campo, baseados em uma seqüência de níveis de alerta. Resultados em tempo quase-real deste sistema estão disponíveis ao público em http://www.cptec.inpe.br/queimadas, http://www.dpi.inpe.br/proarco/bdqueimadas, e http://www2.ibama.gov.br/proarco. --> ABSTRACT: Forest fires and the general burning of vegetation in tropical regions have been acknowiedged among the great environinental problems of the last mo decades. Atmospherie emissions from the bumings and the resulting changes in the ground cover produce significant impacts in the climatic systems at local, regional and global scales. To monitor and assist the planning of actions to control and supervise the use of fire in Brazil a monitoring system based on the intensive use of geoprocessing tecimologies operates already for many years; it was conceived by the Brazilian Institute of the Environrnent and Renewable Resources - IBAMA together with the Brazilian National Space Institute - INPE. The operational monitoring covers all Brazil and has been expanded to many Deighboring countries in South America. The geographical coordinates of the fires in the satellite images, as well as meteorological and climatic data are processed and analyzed to indicate arcas of risk and events that nced inspection and actual controi following a rating alert system. Results in near-real-time of this system are found at http://www.cptec.inpe.br/queimadas, http://www.dpi.inpe.br/proarco/bdqueimadas, e http://www2.ibama.gov.br/proarco. |
